Domestic flights (and international flights)

Domestic flights are cheap and its easy to travel between Vietnams major destinations .

In some big cities as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, visitors can get to the centre by bus.

  • In Hanoi:  

Airport Taxis charge a flat rate of US$ 10 (one-way) for cars from Noi Bai Airport to central Hanoi. The drive takes about 45 minutes. A minibus makes the trip for  US$ 4 per person.
Fare for buses No. 7 Kim Ma - Noi Bai and No. 17 Long Bien - Noi Bai is VND 5,000. There is a bus every 15 - 20 minutes.

  • Ho Chi Minh City:

A metered cab from Tan Son Nhat Airport to downtown costs around VND 50,000. The trip takes about 20 minutes.

 

Bus
The bus system runs almost everywhere within the country, with stations built around the country dividing the territory into regions. Its a cheap and interesting alternative.. However buses tend to be slow and sometimes unreliable in terms of timerables.

 

Trains
The Vietnamese railway system runs from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi along the coast and links with Haiphong and the regions further north. Odd-numbered trains travel South, and even-numbered trains travel north. The fastest trains take at least 36 hours from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Reservations should be made a day or more in advance.

The total length of railway system in Vietnam is 2,600km, including main train routes:

The "Reunification Express Route", from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, is 1,726km.

-  Hanoi -  Lao Cai

-  Hanoi - Haiphong

-   Hanoi - Quan Trieu

-  Hanoi - Dong Dang

-  Kep - Uong Bi - Halong

-  Kep - Luu Xa

The international  trains from Hanoi to Beijing (China) via Dong Dang station (Lang Son).

When it is more developed, Vietnam railway network is possibly linked to Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia railway network via which to Singapore and Laos railways.

Motor bike (or moto as they are called in Vietnam)

The first thing you will notice in the cities about Vietnam is the numer of motor bikes, or moto's. You will be constantly asked if you want to ha a moto-ride. It is actually a good alternative if you plan to travel shorter distance within a citiy or a limited region, however be sure to negotiate the price before you leave. Be careful when its dark. Normal price for short trip is 1-5 dollars. Use helmet if availible.

Its also very convenient to rent a motor bike almost anywhere in Vietnam. Its an easy way of getting around by yourself.

 

Taxi

Taxi is fairly cheap but can variey in price even though you are running on the taxa-meter. Be aware of where you are going so u don't have to go an extra route. Avoid private taxis witout meters. Bring cash.
